Fredro Starr Says Nas Can’t Freestyle, Talks Upcoming Battle With Keith Murray

“Canibus shouldn’t battle no more, man,” Fredro Starr said regarding Canibus’ battle against Dizaster. “That shit was disgraceful.”

With his battle against Def Squad emcee Keith Murray scheduled for September 28 in Stone Mountain, Georgia at MC WAR’s “New World Order II,” Fredro Starr spoke about various battle rap related topics at a press conference.

The Onyx emcee started off by discussing Lil Wayne’s remarks in episode 21 of his “Weezy Wednesdays” series where the YMCMB artist said, “I don’t know how to battle rap.”

“Nah, it’s not built for everybody,” Fredro Starr said. “Nas can’t freestyle. Nas is one of the greatest lyricists ever with a pen but he can’t freestyle … People do what they do and I just feel like I have the ingenuity and enough people skills to be a battle rapper.”

On the subject of coming with prepared rounds against Keith Murray, Fredro Starr says he’s definitely coming prepared.

“Of course, everything is prepared,” he said. “I was with [Rev.] Run on a plane and he was like, ‘Yo without a plan you ain’t going nowhere.’ Run told me that on a plane to Japan 20 years ago. You always gotta have a plan of attack. [You] always gotta know what’s going on, know the rules and try not to choke [laughs], you know what I’m saying? That’s what kills me in battles when niggas choke.”

When asked whether or not he could cope doing the battle with Keith Murray a cappella, Fredro Starr said he would deliver better rounds if the match-up was of the standard battle rap setup.

“I could do a better a cappella because you can take your time with it,” he said. “You ain’t on no rhythm. You ain’t rushing. They say you got 16 bars, and I’m like, ‘Yo I got 16 bars?’ I could make 16 bars two minutes depending on how I do it. I might do 20 pushups in the middle of my shit. With the beat, you on the beat and you kind of contained, you kind of in the ring [and] it’s not flexible… You might be the type of battle rapper that’s more sarcastic and you might need that space to really get your point across.”

When asked about Keith Murray’s content for the battle, Fredro Starr says he simply “doesn’t know.”

“Who knows? He’s crazy, I don’t know. Keith comes from the left field anyway [so] I don’t know what to expect,” he said. “But I know what I need to do. I don’t know what he gon’ say. Whatever he is gonna say it’s like, what can he say? I mean, I don’t know. Let’s see what happens.”

Fredro Starr goes on to discuss how the battle with Keith Murray came about.

“I don’t know how this nigga MC WAR got my number [laughs], but some nigga called me and he was like, ‘Yo, you wanna battle Keith Murray?’ And I was like, ‘Who is this?’ He started talking and explaining it and whatever and then he put Keith on the phone with me,” he said. “We talked for a minute and I was like, ‘Fuck it, let’s do it.’ Keith, his decision kind of helped my decision. It was like, ‘Okay, let’s do it together. Let’s just do it.’

Finally, Fredro Starr touched upon Canibus’ pulling out a notepad against Dizaster, saying it was “disgraceful.”

“Canibus? He shouldn’t battle no more,” he said. “Canibus shouldn’t battle no more, man. That shit was disgraceful. Canibus don’t wanna fuck with me.”

MC WAR’s “New World Order II” is scheduled for Sept. 28, 2014 at The Atrium, 5479 Memorial Drive, Stone Mountain, GA.
